Here’s a few things to give your home a kick. My boyfriend and I have almost entirely opposite tastes; he’s more modern and dark, and I’m more light and shabby-chic. While I appreciate a good modern room, there’s nothing quite like a light airy room for your senses. That being said, since we’re going to be living together and decorating our apartment together, we have to find a way to co-exist. My boyfriend doesn’t give too much though to decor, he mostly just picks what he needs that’s appealing to his senses and the budget he’s given himself, which is usually extremely low. I on the other hand understand the value of nice sheets, or an investment piece.
I got lucky when we both discovered that we liked antiquing and could in fact agree on loving one piece of furniture. I can say that I’ve given a lot of thought about picking something that he and I will both love, and if I have an idea of inspiration it’s important to run it by him, because he’ll usually agree. It’s when I pick out things we haven’t both approved that decorating becomes less fun.
That being said there are a few things I considered non-negotiable as far as decorative items. I stumbled upon a gem of affordable quirky wall decor while reading a Real Simple magazine, and fell in love.
Folks, remember the name White Faux Taxidermy. They have an etsy site which I love. I could troll that site for hours. Anyway, my favorites include a gold mini-skull, gold antlers, and a gold bison skull. Anyone see a pattern? My first love on that list was the bison skull, which sold out due to the fact that these are all hand made, so I went in search of replacements. At this point I had only discovered their website, but their etsy page includes a great deal more than their website, so I quickly found my replacements.
Gold Antlers of my dreams (not a name, these antlers don’t have an official title).
I am now the proud owner of both the antlers and the gold skull, even though they’ve brought the Draper back on their etsy site (quantity of 10), I’ll probably just stick with those two. I’m planning on using my antlers to hang some of my more decorative necklaces above the white West Elm tray that houses all my jewelry. The skull just acts as an accent to where ever I choose for it to live. Right now it’s my make-up tray, a lucite tray from CB2. I think it’s fitting for now.
